- This list is biased towards the 109 because I've never owned an 88 and have no idea what
modern tyre size is closest to the original 88 size.
- This range of modern tyre sizes could be suited to a Land Rover 109 without rubbing on
the chassis on full lock or putting the speedo too far out of whack. The data was taken
from a popular manufacturers specification sheets and the dimensions quoted will be
typical of most manufacturers tyres in these sizes.
- Series IIA Land Rovers came with 6.00x16 on the 88, 7.50x16 on the 109 and 9.00x16 on
the One Ton 109.
- A stock 16 inch 109 rim is 5.5 inches wide and two of these sizes would suit stock rims.
- A good rim choice for a 109 is the 7.0 inch wide steel Discovery rim. All of the 16 inch
sizes above will fit. Many Disco owners ditch their steels in favour of after-market
alloys and the rims can be bought from the owners or from tyre fitting places. If they
come with good stock Disco rubber in 225/75/R16D, I suppose you could run them until they
wear out but they are a little short and you will lose ground clearance
and have a speedo which reads faster than true ground-speed.
- Don't expect to pay peanuts for a Disco rim. Discovery owners aren't complete fools and
know that their old rims are sought after by Series owners. But don't pay more than
$A50.00 for a Disco rim without rubber in good order. Thats a fair price but if you see
them for less, grab them.
- In my opinion, the 235/85R16 mounted on a Discovery rim is the best general purpose
choice for a 109.
- Eight spoke steel 15 inch rims made to fit a Land Rover are a popular choice, especially
among the wide sand-tyre set. The two 15 inch sizes above work well.
- Be careful of alloy Range Rover rims. Most of them won't fit a Series because the Series
hub drive flange is too bulky, not to mention the front hub lockers if you have them.
- Be sure to check your local transport laws to ensure that your tyre and rim choice are
legal.
