"During his lifetime Sheriff Matthew Nunan provided a written statement to the early California historian, H.H. Bancroft. Bob Standish copied the statement as follows during a 2005 visit to the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley.

H.H. Bancroft Collection

Bancroft Library

One of that race which has given to the world so many eminent men, Mr. Nunan counts among his own ancestry many revered names that have adorned the pages of history, and not a few members, who, though unknown to fame, were nevertheless entitled to general respect and regard. In America it is a name that is well and honorably known, and the citizen of whom we now speak has added considerable luster thereto. Born in 1836 in Limerick, Ireland, after receiving the rudiments of a functional education, Matthew at the early age of 14 already feels within him ambition to cause for himself a career of honor and independence. He comes to America and obtains employment in farming at Sacketts Harbor New York, an occupation which had been his fathers in the old country during many years. In 1855 he moved to the Pacific Shore believing it will afford a better field for an enterprising man. It is a happy inspiration. We first see young Nunan working in the mines of Nevada city for wages until he become conversant with mining when he buys interests first in one mine and next in another meeting with such success in both ventures that in 1859 he has already accumulated a considerable sum of money. After paying a visit to his parents then residing in Milwaukee, he married Miss Delia Horn in New York a few months later and returned with his wife to San Francisco. Between 1860 and 1865 he engaged in the grocery business, and then with Charles M. Armstrong in partnership goes into the Mission Street Brewery, which undertaking meets with so much success that the partners find it necessary to enlarge the facilities of the business and then was built the Hibernia Brewery on Howard Street near Ninth, San Francisco. Since 1870 this establishment has been wholly owned and under sole management of Mr. Nunan, and has grown to become the largest on the Pacific Coast; its sales which at first were of only 2500 barrels, having risen to 300,000 a year, making an annual business of $200,000 and $300,000. The building, which is of four stories, fronts 72 feet on Howard and runs back 160 feet to Tehama Street and 40 men, together with many horses and wagons are constantly employed at the business. Mr. Nunan's successful career as a man of affairs brought him into such prominence that though his private interests demanded his whole attention, he couldnot long withstand the continually expressed wishes of his numerous friends, to accept the candidateship for sheriff of the county of San Francisco. He accepted the position as a duty he owed to the honest majority of the community, which was anxious to counteract the workings of a corrupt ring to foist its tool upon them. This was an instance of an office seeking an incumbent and his official course proved that the confidence reposed in him had not been misplaced. Unlike many of the public servants who go into office poor and come out of it rich and are ever after the object of distrust, Sheriff Nunan by his unremitting attention to his duties, as well as the honorable manner of conducting was a pecuniary loser, but in exchange enhanced high esteem through the public previously formed of him. He neglected his private interests and suffered thereby, as he estimates not less than $100,000. However, this led to his reelection for the same office in 1877 by a very large majority and he had to serve a second term.

The Sheriff must impose some duties which are painful to a man of feeling and he must nerve himself for their performance. Evictions and attachments are not pleasant, but the execution of criminals is still worse. To Mr. Nunan's lot fell the hanging of a Chinaman who killed one of his countrymen and of a young man sentenced to the last penalty for murdering a policeman. It will be well to remember that this second office term was during the period of agitation, when owing to collapse of the Comstock mines, and other causes the city of San Francisco was assembled with men who could find no work, and were being moulded like wax by political demagogues and anarchists for their own purposes. Thanks to the vigilance of the authorities, among whom the Sheriff deserves great credit, backed by the active cooperation of the sound portions of the populations, the city was saved from witnessing serious disturbances and possible calamities. In his four years tenure of the office, Sheriff Nunan won the admiration of his political opponents as well as his friends. Since his retirement to private life he has avoided all political preferment and honor, though often urged to accept positions of prominence. His tastes run in the more quiet channels of private life, and his extensive business affords him a field large enough for the exercise of both his intellectural and physical strength. He has concluded not to enter public life again unless there should be an emergency. In his.and civic virtues much bargains brought prominently into play to demonstrate every citizens best services to defend the country and its institutions, or to preserve law and order.

Mr. Nunan has one son and four daughters, all born in San Francisco, the son is associated with him and one of the daughters is married to State Senator Spellacy. It is hardly necessary to add that Mr. Nunan's business methods have been scrupiously and proverbially upright, that his wealth, which is considerable, aside from the capital in the brewery, has resulted from well directed and that unonstentatious charity finds affiliation.he has shown remarkable abilities, great force of charcter and sterling mind. A representative of the better class of the Irist races, he is proud of it, he has brought honor to the race and Irishmen may well be proud of him. The inhabitants of San Francisco of all races see Matthew Nunan as worthy of the name of good citizen."
